Close to $150,000 in two days racing
New Zealand-breds earned almost $150,000 in two days racing at Caulfield last week.
Leilani earned $78,750 for winning the Caulfield Cup last Saturday, giving her Masterton owner, Mr lan Macßae cause to bless the day he paid 400gns for her dam, the Summertime mare Lei as a yearling at Trentham. Mr Macßae did not offer Leilani for sale as a youngster but leased her to Mr Andrew Peacock, an Australian politician, and Mr I. Rice, a Melbourne city councillor. After Leilani won the A.J.C. Oaks last Easter Mr Macßae turned down an offer of $lOO,OOO for the filly. But a few weeks earlier Mr Macßae had sold a yearling brother to Leilani for $32,500 at Trentham, and now has a yearling sister at home, a youngster probably destined also to join an Australian stable on lease. Broadway Hit’s second to Leilani in the Caulfield Cup was worth *20,250, which made him the second biggest winner of the New Zealand-breds in action last Saturday. *7OOO PURCHASE Broadway Hit is by Sovereign Edition from Hello Dolly, an unraced mare by Pharamond belonging to the same family as Royal Sheen, an Auckland Cup
winner, and Alluring, winner of the Great Northern Oaks and Waikato Gold Cup. Bred at Sir Woolf Fisher’s Ra Ora Stud, he cost *7OOO at the national sales in 1971. Prince Amura (Gold Sovereign —Lady Amura) earned *4900 by winning the Moonga Handicap at Caulfield last Saturday. Mahal, from J. W. Winder’s Cambridge stable, also carried off a *4900 prize when he won a welter in the hands of the North Island jockey, Noel Harris. Turfcutter's Caulfield Cup yielded $9OOO and advanced R. Verner’s charge in favour for the Melbourne Cup, and Anallght, from R. J. Campbell’s Matamata stable, won $3200 with her third In the One Thousand Guineas.

Didham’s mount ■ Caboul in the Merson Cooper Stakes, the New Zealand-bred Bold Mayo left a firm Impresston that he will be a much improved youngster when he tuts at one or more of the feature two-year-old races at the V.R.C. meeting. Bold Mayo is by Taipan from the courageous Mayo Gold, and cost *50,000 at Trentham last January. Three wins and a number of minor piacings by New Zealandbreds on the second day at Caulfield on Wednesday of last week were worth $21,500. The Washdyke speedster. Grey Way earned $B4OO in winning the Chlrnslde Stakes at weight-for-age. ' Bellota’s win in the Coongy Handicap yielded *7OOO, and Shiftmar (Shlftnal—Dogma) earned *3500 in winning the Leonard Handicap.
