Ship towed after engines fail
The engines of the Silver Fem broke down twice while the vessel was entering the port of Lyttelton yesterday. After the second break-down, about 7.50 a.m., the ship anchored oft Camp Bay. She was towed into port by two tugs about noon, and was piloted by the harbourmaster (Captain D. Holden).
The ship has come from Japan, and will discharge 155 built-up cars at Lyttelton.
Fewer ships are in port, and the labour shortage on the waterfront has eased for the first time for several weeks. At 7 a.m. yesterday there was a surplus of seven men, but they started work at 1 p.m. A total of 477 men worked during the day and 75 worked at night.
