Caller ‘not from party’

A person calling on householders in Rangiora this week might have given the misleading impression that he was from the Labour Party, said a party spokesman yesterday. The president of the Rangiora branch of the party (Mr L. J. Mountford) said that the caller had been asking questions about Labour leaders and other matters. No person has been authorised by the branch to make such calls, and the local member of Parliament (Mr T. K. Burke) had confirmed that no-one was canvassing on his behalf. Persons interviewed had been asked how they voted in the last General Election. An official of the branch would not ask such a question as part of a canvass, said Mr Mountford.
