Henry’s Gold fancied for Egmont meeting
(“The Press” Special Service) NEW PLYMOUTH. Northern horses seem certain to dominate the T. H. Walker Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Egmont Racing Club meeting in Hawera today.
Henry’s Gold and Kauere Lad, from Matamata, and Sobeit, from Te Awamutu, have been in good form recently, and it will be surprising if the winner is not from this trio. Henry’s Gold, a fresh runner on the circuit, recorded a fair fifth at Ellerslie on October 12 in the race won by Sobeit. However, with a pull in the weights it would not surprise if he turned the tables. Sobeit’s recent form has been most consistent, and she is the likely favourite. But with 56.5 kg in a field that contains several noted frontrunners, she will need to be at her best. Kauere Lad is now the topweight after his win over 1600 metres at Franklin on Saturday. He looks capable of handling the extra distance, and despite his weight must be respected. Highland Blend, .a stablemate of Sobeit, made a bold bid to lead all the way at Stratford on Monday but was caught short of the line by Heckle’s Choice, which is considered good enough for a tilt at the New Zealand Cup. Highland Blend has shown a distinct liking for Taranaki tracks, and if he unharmed by his run on Monday should be prominent for a long way. The light-weights, Etosha and Regal Lion, make strong appeal. Although well beaten on Monday. Etosha is holding her form, while Regal Lion, which was in need of his Waverley race, worked well enough at New Plymouth yesterday to be a definite prospect SECOND LEG Auditor won so well at Otaki that he is sure to be a shortpriced favourite in the second leg, the Waipari Handicap. Auditor’s Otaki run was his first for (nearly 18 months after injury, apd it will be surprising if he Is not Improved. Hagen’s Merit, with the aid of her Stratford run, makes considerable appeal over this distance. She Is a noted speedster which should be prominent for a long way. Mr Dan was beaten at Trentham on Saturday, but on what should be a drier track, he must be a top chance. He has beaten better fields than this. Blanco Sol, the improving Gav Sovereign, and Midnight Chief appeal most of the others.
