Cee Ar first leg Pick f or Greymouth
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. Gee Ar should end his visit to the West Coast with a welldeserved win in the West Coast Trotting Free-for-all at Greymouth tonight.
Narrowly beaten by Jillinda two starts ago at Motukarara and no more than a length from Dupreez on Monday night, Cee Ar meets the opposition on level terms in the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Both times he started from 15 metres, finishing boldly in the straight without being driven hard to the line. Cee Ar has drawn No. 4 on the front line. His main rival, Jillinda, is not so well off, having drawn wide at No. 9. The only time Jillinda had a rest on the first night was over the last 800 metres, when Dupreez took over, but she was struggling then and only her gameness kept her going. She rates a winning chance if she can lead, but on first night form both Cee Ar and Hal Good will head her again. The Goodland seven-year-old, Hal Good, swooped on the leaders over the last 400 metres after being pushed back and clearing the stragglers too late to reach Dupreez. He looks the improver. Only Lessaday of the others poses a threat, although the toughness of I. S. Sutherland’s Duntroon pair. Screws Loose and Waipounamu, is worth respect. Second leg Two first-night winners — Royal Sceptre and Bluegum Surprise — might be the best second-leg chances in the Stewards’ Handicap. Both began fast on Monday, took up positions either in or close to the lead, and won their events without being pressed. Bluegum Surprise is such a fast beginner that from No. 1 he should be well placed by K. D. Townley throughout. Royal Sceptre also has the pace, and he made a smart beginning from his wide draw on Monday. He is just as wide tonight. Hurricane Star and Bonnie Charlie, second and third behind Laird O’Logan in the second leg on the first night, must be respected again. Hurricane Star has threatened to leave this grade ! for some time. The only other candidate with much hope of success is Lord Nova, which, until running into trouble on the home turn, looked certain to have a hand in the finish of the Tasman Handicap. As it was he ran seventh — a fair distance from the winner — but an encouraging run for all that. His trainer, J. W. Smolensk!, had none the best of things on the track on Monday night. Two top prospects in the minor races are Pacific Wave, in the Farewell Handicap, and Winning Smoke, in the Second County Handicap. Pacific Wave locked wheels with Van Order just when Bluegum Surprise skipped clear in the Borough Handicap, so did well to run second. Winning Smoke was driven with great keenness by W. N. Hunt and faded moments before the line in his race. The weather in Greymouth is fine and the track will be firm.
