British “pilgrims”
Sir, — I. Trew seems to have missed the point of my first letter. I am not opposed to British immigrants. My argument is that no person of any nationality — and I regard Britons and New Zealanders as different nationalities — should have the right to go to another country, and buy a scarce resource such as land, for the betterment of that person’s way of life unless he prepared to knuckle down and work hard, accept the culture of his new country, contribute something of value to the community, and eventually become a naturalised citizen of that new country. We do not need those who come here to “do their own thing,” live off_ our land, use our Social’ Security services, and yet maintain their own nationality, just in case New Zealand too, is another sinking ship. — Yours etc., J. D. PALMER. October 21, 1974.
