Patrolmen wash cars
The possibiliity of obtaining a vehicle-maintenance worker to wash and do minor servicing of the Christchurch division’s fleet of about 40 patrol cars and motor-cycles was being studied by the Ministry of Transport, the regional secretary for transport (Mr D. L. Hogan) said. Mr Hogan confirmed that • city traffic officers generally : wash the vehicles themselves, and said the Ministry would .prefer not to use them for [this work. ' The Ministry has repairs; on its vehicles made by garages. Mr Hogan said it had been found that having the vehicles serviced and repaired under contract was the most economical and practical system. The police in Christchurch, who have about 60 vehicles, have a staff of five to do minor maintenance work and lubrication, including a fulltime car cleaner, The main repairs to police cars are done by the Post Office garage.
