Zoo appeal
Sir, — A letter in Thursday’s issue of "The Press” condemned the whole concept of zoos, and made specific mention of the one at Orana Park. Although I tend to agree, I wonder if the writer is aware of the dual purpose of zoos today. While I, too, abhor the concept of capturing wild animals in the name of recreation and amusement, I am aware that for some species the only sure hope for their survival lies in their being kept in zoos. For instance, on Page 13 of the same issue was a photo of green turtles which had been nursed in the Miami Seaquarium and were now being released in an effort to rebuild the population. Does the South Island Zoological Society give priority to recreation for the already overpampered human species, or to the breeding and repopulating of rare and threatened other species? — Yours, etc., ROWAN TAYLOR. October 17, 1974. [This correspondence is now closed.—Editor.]
