Hotere’s work seen to advantage
An exhibition of paintings by Ralph Hotere is always to be taken seriously In the intimate surroundings of the Bosshard Gallery in Akaroa. 11 of his paintings and 12 drawings are seen to the best possible advantage The 12 drawings are spontaneous yet controlled researches that contain mane of the seeds that flower in the finished paintings. The drawings and paintings are from the "Requiem Series" which is a continuing visual and personal document of grief. Moments of the joy of human contact are expressed in the rich orange, yellow red. green and purple lines of the major works catalogued as Al and A2. The formality and trad gedy of death is clearly part of other. more sombre works, such as A 9. The continuing fascination with Hotere’s paintings rests with the infinite subtleties contained in his use ot blacks which can only be compared with the printmaker’s choice of inks. Sometimes warm, sometimes
reflecting his blacks are used his blacks to plumb the depths of human passion in The Bosshard Gallery is open from 2—5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays or by request.
