Underdog triumphs
Success has often eluded Merivaie-Papanui in the senior Rugby grade, but the team’s fortunes improved dramatically when it participated in the Prebbleton seven -a - side competition under lights recently. Merivaie-Papanui swept all its rivals aside on the way to winning the tournament trophy. The fruits of victory tasted sweeter because they were earned the hard way — Christchurch and Linwood, the two top teams, were among its victims. Merivale - Papanui beat Linwood in the quarterfinals and Christchurch in the final. The other teams it beat were Old Boys and Shirley.
