The former New Zealand representative, Ken Simpson (Toe H), who will again be a prominent figure in the Canterbury inter-club track and field season which formally opens at Queen Elizabeth II Park this afternoon. The risk of further injury to previously damaged ankles has prompted him to retire from the triple jump, the event in which he has specialised in recent seasons. Simpson won the New Zealand triple jump title in 1972 and 1973, and was unlucky to miss selection for the Commonwealth Games earlier this year. How'ever, he now intends to restrict his activities to the long jump, the 110 metres hurdles, club relays, and coaching. Before he concentrated on jumping, Simpson was a leading hurdler. He won the national 220 yards hurdles championship in 1969, an event which has since been removed from the championship- programme.
