Krips dies in Geneva
Josef Krips. one of the world’s outstanding conductors. died on Saturday night in Geneva, of lung cancer. The Vienna-born Krips i started his musical career at' the age of 19 when he was choir conductor and kapellmeister at the Vienna Volksoper. and became Germany’s youngest general music director five years later in Karlsruhe. From 1933 to 1938 Krips conducted at the Vienna State Opera, and lectured at the Academy for Music and Pictorial Art. During Austria's Nazi occupation from 1938 to
1945 he was barred from performing in public, but immediately after World War II he helped organise the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera. One of his last positions was with the San Francisco
Symphony Orchestra. Later he was chief conductor of I the Vienna Symphony Orichestra. He married his former secretary. Baroness Henriette Prochazka, in 1969. His first wife, Maria, who was very popular with music circles in San FranIcisco, died earlier this year.
