Liner evokes old Atlantic run
Lloyd Triestino'o 11-year-old, ' 6956-ton Italian cargo liner. Esquilino (named after one of Rome’a seven hills), berthed at Cashin Quay yesterday morning. ' For older seafarers the famous house flag of Lloyd Triestlno, ( recalled the heyday of the Atlantic passenger liners. 1 The Esquilino is commanded by Captain Fulvlo Cosullch, of Trieste, aged 45 and married, ■ who said that Lloyd Triestino today had only five passenger I liners. The company’s entire fleet was 29 vessels, but there 1 were several more under charter. _ . 1 Now the passenger fleet comprises the Marconi and Galileo in the Australian service; the I Africa and Europa in the South African service; and the Asia, 1 which runs to India. But several men at Lyttelton remember the ' stately Atlantic liners, Conte Verde, Conte Blancamano, and ! many more. Captain Cosullch < said Italy did not have the same difficulty in obtaining seagoing officers as was experienced by other nations, but there was a 1 scarcity of crew. Now discharging Italian 1 general cargo, the Esquilino has already visited Melbourne, Auckland and Wellington. She will complete at Lyttelton. She has loaded some return general eargo, but will take her main quota from Bluff, Dunedin and Napier. The Esquilino is a striking, flush-decked eargo liner. She will be followed this month by the Palatlno and the Vlminale will follow early next year. Originally, the Esquilino carried nine passengers. Today this ac- , commodation is unused. If the : experience of Dutch, German, ■ and French penetration into New ■ Zealand's trade is any guide, the I Italians will progress rapidly. French, Russian, Japanese, ■ Korean, and American vessels do . not normally permit officers’ wives to make long voyages. The same applies in Italy, according to Captain Cosullch, . although Italian wives may make , short coastal voyages. ♦ ♦ * The Pacific Far East Line ; would Introduce two more container ships into the South Pacific service, to bring the fleet up to five, the vice-president of the line (Mr S. P. Tarantlne) said in Auckland today, the Press Association reports More emphasis was being placed on the South Pacific section of the line's services because the company believed there was more grqwth potential in this area in spite of the recent setbacks to New Zealand meat exports. • • • ARRIVALS Itohamu Maru No. 3 (8.12 a.m.), > 8000, Capt.
