Withdrawal from U.N.

The Chinese Government has carried its “criticise Confucius” campaign to the halls of the United Nations in New York: a grey marble slab bearing a quotation from the Chinese sage (551-479 8.C.) has been removed from the second floor of the Assembly Hall building. The Secretary-General (Dr Kurt Waldheim) ordered the inscribed slab removed at the insistence of Mr Huang Hua, the Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations. The door-sized marble slab was a gift to the United Nations from the Republic of China (Taiwan). The calligraphy was that of Dr Sun Yat-sen. founder of the Chinese Republic, who is still acknowledged as such in the People’s Republic of China.— (“Free China Weekly,” September 29, 1974).
