Hostage ailing
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SANTO DOMINGO, Oct. 2. Anxiety over the guerrilla occupation of the Venezuelan consulate in Santo Domingo mounted today after their leader said that one of them was seriously wounded and one of their seven hostages said he was ill.
As the battle of nerves entered its fifth night, the guerrilla leader, Radhames Mendez, told Archbishop Hugo Planco, who has been trying to mediate, that he would not reduce demands for a million dollars from the United States Government and the release of 37 political prisoners in Dominican goals. He admitted for the first time since seizing the consulate on Friday that one of his men was seriously wounded, although he did not say how. The sick hostage, a Venezuelan Vice-Consul, Mr Waldemar Alvarado, told his wife in a letter carried out by the Achbishop: "I am feeling bad, my constitution is beginning to flag.” The hostages, including three women, are being kept without mattresses, electricity, or water.
