Air fares for sick

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Chatham Islands residents referred for medical treatment on the mainland will have their fares home paid in full. The Minister of Health (Mr McGuigan), announced today that he had approved of the North Canterbury Hospital Board and the Wellington Hospital Board paying the whole fare for patients referred to them by the islands’ doctor. Payment of the full fare will apply when the patient returns to the Chathams on the first available flight after treatment. Previously, residents needing medical treatment not available on the Chatham Islands have had to pay one third of the homeward fare themselves. This would continue to apply when patients chose, for personal reasons, to delay their return after treatment, the Minister said. —
