Resignation of David Exel discussed

,'N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Current Affairs Broadcasters’ Society has passed a resolution expressing its “extreme regret” that Mr David Exel had found it necessary to resign from the staff of the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation. The society said it appreciated and endorsed Mr Exel’s motives. It said broadcasters were dissatisfied with the N.Z.B.C.’s “dereliction of duty” with regard to current affairs, staff and programmes. At thia late stage, the statement alleged, no plans had been formulated for current affairs programmes for 1975, in spite of the fact that the new broadcasting structure could not begin

operation until April next year at the earliest. The society’s members were also concerned that corporation executives were proving themselves either unwilling or impotent to make urgent decisions affecting programme quality and staff morale. “The society is deeply disturbed that it has apparently taken the resignation of a journalist of Mr Exel’s calibre even to promote the discussion of pressing matters in the area of N.Z.B.C. current affairs,” it said. The society’s national executive and N.Z.B.C. senior executives will meet on Friday in an attempt to formulate solutions to urgent problems facing current affairs broadcasters, said the society.
