Wiri goods in demand

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Sales of fabricated products from Alcan New Zealand, Ltd’s, Wiri plant rose by 12 per cent in the halfyear to June 20, compared with the corresponding period last year.

The directors said that the group net profit rose, although at a somewhat slower rate, because of higher material and labour costs. These costs had accelerated in the second half of the year, and the company had been given approval to increase its prices by an average of about 5 per cent as an interim measure.

An application for future increases was before the Price Tribunal, and a decision was expected soon. Delays of over four months had taken place in processing this application. This had meant that the company had had to absorb most of the higher costs which should have been reflected promptly in increased selling prieces.
