Candidates agree on dogs

Stray dogs and Thompson Park were two issues discussed by candidates for the Pegasus ward at an election meeting in New Brighton last evening.

About 30 people attended the meeting to hear seven of the 10 candidates for the ward. The candidates present were Mr A. S. Cockburn, Mr P. D. Dunbar and Mrs C. J. Evans (Citizens), Mr P. D. Anderson, Miss V. iS. Buck, Mr W. Massey: I (Labour), and Mr R. S.l Clarkson (Values).

All the candidates agreed; that something had to be done! to control the number of stray dogs in New Brighton! and Aranui and the filth they; caused. Suggestionsincluded in-’

; creasing dog registration fees land appointing more dog rangers. I In answer to a question | about the future of Thompson Park, Cr Dunbar suggested that Marine Parade be

diverted west of the park and the whole park integrated in the foreshore.

All candidates agreed that the park was an eyesore and needed improving. Cr Massey said it was “distinctly possible” to serve on the council as well as being a member of Parliament. He was replying to charges that being elected to the City Council was a stepping stone to Parliament.

A member of the public! ! said the absence from the meeting of a candidate, Mrs M. D. Batchelor, who is the member of Parliament for Avon, could mean that she could not satisfactorily do . two jobs. Now that the city had a .ward system, there were not las many people for an in- [ dividual councillor to look [after, said Cr Massey. Cr Dunbar said it had been unwise for Mrs Batchelor to: be nominated for the city j council when there were other capable people available with plenty of time. Mrs Evans said high-rise, buildings on the foreshore at' New Brighton were a possi-l bility. Miss Buck said they would spoil the environment.] Mr Cockburn said he was 1 against high-rise buildings, > but they could be possible in certain areas. Cr Dunbar | said high-rise buildings were[ desirable in general terms. ;
