TROTTING Black Frost has a sound run at Methven trials
Black Frost, the veteran trotter, showed that he was coming to hand well for his Highbank trainer, J. C. Nordqvist, when he was successful yesterday at trials in Methven. He gave away starts of up to 100 m to his rivals and at the end won quite handily.
Black Frost, which has been off the scene since April, 1973, because of injury, has been back in work for some months, but his tasks until yesterday have not been 100 serious.
Black Frost trotted the 2600 m on a slow track in 3:44.6, the final 800 m in 1:3.6. His run was a sound one because he gave the leaders a start of five lengths racing to the straight. Now a 12-year-old, he will probably resume racing in the Banks Peninsula Trotting Cup on Saturday week. Pompano, which has been racing rather unluckily, finished second, returning a sound trial for her engagement in the Mount Somers Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. Del Renown, a stablemate of the winner, held on for third, clear of Byebye Lady.
Wesenelli earned an Agrade rating when he proved a class above his rivals in a race for B-grade maiden trotters. He won as he liked by three lengths in 3:43, a splendid run for one in his class. His stablemate, Broad Light, finished second, ahead of Now, with the others, headed by Avalon Lord, beaten off. Stablemates, Tinwald and Hampstead finished almost together at the head of the heat for Cl pacers. Both did their work well, and with Wheatson and Side Step they will give their trainer, W. E. Lowe, a strong hand in slow-class events in Canterbury in the next few weeks. Fancy Kate fought on quite
well for third, shading Red Plaid. The winner took 3:41.6 for the 2600 m, the final 800 m in the smart time of 1:1.8. Ascot Chance showed speed to win the race for flgrade pacers in 3:35.4, the last 800 m in 1:4.2. He shaded Charlie Sparks by a nose, with a length to Concordia and four lengths to Amaflirt. Impressive Yankee Twinkle provided the highlight of the day when he won his qualifying heat in the very smart time of 3.T9.6. There was much merit in his win, because he was slow away and must have lost 25m. Tamara Del set a hot pace, taking 1:5.2 for the opening 800 m and 2:13.8 for the first 1600. Yankee Twinkle gradually made up his leeway, and in the straight he came on with a fine stayer’s run. His time has seldom been bettered on the course, even in good conditions. Yesterday
the track was still on tire slow side after rain and last Friday. Raced and trained by R. M . Cameron, he is a fine type otf three-year-old gelding by Sly Yankee from Twinkle Hall* herself a good winner a few years back. Qualifier The only other qualifier in the four heats for pacers was the three-year-old filly, Tennessee, which made all of the pace when the track was slower ■ than in Yankee Twinkle’s heat. She was always clear of her rivals and won by 20 lengths in 3:22.1 —another smart run. A filly by Lumber Dream from Virago, she is trained at Leeston by T. M. McMillan, who races her in partnership with Mr G. J. Benny. She, too, should be an early winner. Results:—
