Cathedral crosses damaged

Two crosses were damaged in an incident involving an upset man in the Christchurch Cathedral about 9.30 a.m. yesterday. The man, who was later committed to Sunnyside Hospital, removed a 3ft wooden cross and an 18in silver cross from the Lady Chapel, flinging the silver one into Cathedral Square and damaging the wooden one inside the Cathedral. Before he was taken away by the police, the man threw a violent fit. He was taken directly to Sunnyside Hospital.

The Dean of Christchurch .(The Very Rev. M. L. Underhill) said the silver cross would h«ve to be repaired by a jeweller, but the wooden cross was not badlv damaged. “There Is little one can do to protect the Cathedral from such disturbances,” he said. The silver cross was placed in the Lady Chapel by a previous Bishop of Christchurch (tl’e Rt Rev. A. K. Warren). The wooden cross formerly marked the grave of a World War I soldier.
