SHIPPING NEWS Master mariner and printer

Although not the first master mariner in New Zealand to be a full-time newspaper employee. Captain \V P. Russell, aged 47. master of the refrigerated cargo liner NZ Waitangi, now on her first visit to Ljttelton under this nanfe is probably the first who is a qualified printer. Aboard the 9067-ton. six-year-old Glasgow-built motor vessel yesterday. Captain Russell, who served in British vessels before doing a two-year contract with the Union Steam Ship Company, raid that he originally came ashore to seek employment so as to enjoy home life. He completed his apprenticeship as a printer, doing the 1C ; OOO training hours, although he was already a qualified foreign-going master mariner. Today, he could probablv get a job with any New Zealand newspaper, if he wished. But conditions improved at sea. and Captain Russell went back to sea briefly, relieving as chief officer of the Maui Pomare. This is always a trap for any seafarer. and he has been going to sea since. His home is in Wellington, where live his wife and three children. Before commanding the NZ Waitangi, which has a complement of 41, Captain Russell served as master in the Cook Strait rail ferries. The NZ Waitangi is discharging 3600 tons of general cargo from the United Kingdom, but with only limited labour because of a shortage. She caused interest by having engine trouble, on her outward voyage, being towed from the Azores to Lisbon for lengthy repairs. Her new colour scheme is unfamiliar. especially to those who remember her when she was Shaw Savill and Albion’s Britannic. a regular Lyttelton caller. Tomorrow evening, the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Company of Master Mariners will attend at a special function aboard the vessel. ❖ ❖ ARRIVALS Union New Zealand (5.57 a m.), 3166. Capt. P.
