Sealing of shoulders

The National Roads Board has eased its policy on the sealing of State highways in built-up areas. An area of up to three metres beyond the highway edge-line can now be esaled from Roads Board funds after the need for a sealing extension has been established.

Previously, the board’s policy in built-up areas was to sea) a road width sufficient for the needs of traffic and to construct 10ft metal shoulders.

Recent tours by the board had shown there was a need for road shoulders on the outskirts of towns to be sealed, said the director of reading (Mr F. A. Langbeing). Maintenance costs of road shoulders were often reduced by sealing, he said.
