Closed — for alterations
There was nothing alarming about the decision to carry on the interior renovations in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament behind closed doors, the administrator of the Cathedral (the Rev. J. Harrington) said yesterday.
The decision was announced at all masses at the Cathedral on Sunday. Father Harrington said it was common practice to bar public from parts of buildings that were being altered. The building would remain closed for another two weeks. During that time masses would be celebrated in the Cathedral Presbytery, and on Sunday in St Patrick’s Hall at normal times.
The media and photographers had been barred from entering the Cathedral because it was pointless “to open old wounds,” Father Harrington said. The interior was being prepared for alterations to the sanctuary, the construction of the Blessed Sacrament
chapel, and renovations and cleaning of the interior. The work was expected to cost $30,000, he said.
