Relaxation in Greece
(N.Z P.A -Reuter —Copy, io lit) GREECE The Prime Minister (Mr Constantine Karamanlis) has legalised the Greek Com rnunist Party—outlawed for over 25 years—in a bold move which further paves the way for an early election and the restoration of democracy. The provisional Government, installed after seven years of military rule, also scrapped a law passed by th<junta which banned ah political party activity. Martial law will also be partially lifted to allow election rallies and other public gatherings. The decision by 67-year-old Mr Karamanlis to legalise the Communist Party is a major step which can leave no doubt of his intention to lead Greece to full democracy. The party has been outlawed since an armed Communist rebellion, finally defeated in 1950, which official estimates said cost Greece 90,000 dead and left 700,000 people homeless.
