(.V Z P .4. -Heuter —Copyright) NEW YORK, September 26. Greece has ruled out the United States Secretary of State (Dr Henry Kissinger) as a mediator in its deadlock with Turkey over the future of Cyprus, the Associated Press reported.
“I don’t see the roie of Henn- Kissinger as a mediator trusted by us and trusted by the Turks,” the Greek Foreign Minister (Mr George Mavros) told a news conference yesterday. Mr Mavros’ said that he could understand Dr Kissinger's interest in the Cyprus stuation because of its danger to world peace Anv interest is well accepted, he commented, but not as an official mediator Before Mr Mavros’s rejection. the Secretary of State had anneared to be moving gradually into a new maior peace-making effort on the o-der of his shuttle diplomacy between the Arabs and Israel last winter. After a cordial meeting with Mr Mavros on Tuesdav. Dr Kissinger hinted to a reporter that he might stop in C'-prus during his trio to the Middle East next month.
“The United States is prepared to do what is useful to bring about a fair and workable solution, including possibl. my direct involvement.” he said then. Dr Kissinger also spoke on Tuesday with the Turkish Foreign Minister (Mr Turan Gunes) and scheduled additional meetings with both him and Mr Mavros after his return to New York on Sunday night Mr Mavros and Mr Gunes are among statesmen attending the United Nations General Assembly session. Greek hostility toward the United States erupted during *he Turkish invasion because Greeks felt that the United States failed to prevent the invasion and then failed to check the Turkish advance Neither the Greeks. Turks, nor Cypriots have ever publicly asked Dr Kissinger to intervene. |
