Employment card

Sir, — I was shocked to read the news item in “The Press” this morning concerning the Department of Labour and the vacancy card displayed in Christchurch containing the words “pakeha only.” The fact that this card wa,s not intended for public display makes the matter all the more serious. How long has the Department of Labour in Christchurch been allowing prospective employers to be selective as to the race of those they employ? I trust that the department will make it very clear that such requests for labour will not

be accepted. This also raises the question of the firm concerned in this particular incident. Should not some action be taken against it for what appears to be an obvious breach of the Race Relations Act? — Yours, L. E. BROWN. September 25, 1974.
