Matai Industries
Sir, — The collapse of Matai Industries must be regarded as a major disaster for the Labour Government — a disaster from which the wily Mr Muldoon will gleefully extract every _ cent of political capital. It is to be hoped that the official recei v e r-manager’s report, when made public, will enlighten us as to the real causes of the breakdown, but in the meantime the failure must be laid squarely at Mr Freer’s door. There are questions to be answered, such as how did the productivity figures of Matai Industries (related to manpower) compare with simila'' industries east of the great divide? News media pictures of the interiors of Matai factories are not over-impres-sive from the aspect of efficient layout of plant. West Coasters too, should be cautious of their newfound champion Mr Muldoon. Past National Governments have turned a blind eye to Coast problems for many years. — Yours etc., SELWYNT September 25, 1974.
