Pianoforte recital
I John Jennings played ; Beethoven’s Piano Sonata !No. 29 in B flat, Opus 106, ’in the University Hall I yesterday afternoon. He (began this lovely work with dramatic challenge and ■sonorous tone. The atmosj phere of high-resolve continued throughout the move- : ment.
The scherzo which followed also had turbulence throughout its short stay.
The slow movement was played with expressive and gently singing tone appealing to deep and spiritually courageous feeling. Mr Jen-j nings brought forth the lovely Gothic patterns of tracery with clear and ; appropriate moulding of 'design. It was a strongly planned performance; and the movement ended in poignant dignity. The last movement had fire and brilliant vigour. At times there were dazzling coruscations of tone leading to pensive and dignified entry of the fugue subject. Soon this solemnity passed, and brilliant passages-of-arms held sway once more, leading to a tumultuous ending. For Mr Jennings, this performance was a tour de force. —C.F.B.
