SHIPPING NEWS Japanese ships in port
In a period of 24 hours, extending from Wednesdax morning to yesterday morning, three large Japanese cargo vessels i arrived at Lyttelton. Two of them, the Norfolk Maru ;and Hawaii Maru. of the MitsuiiO.S.K. Lines, brought heavy Japanese general cargo. A third. ■ the Montreal Maru. owned by Sanko Kisen K.K , is a bulk car’rier. loaded with sulphur from i Vancouver. At present. Japan's huge tuna and squid fleet is absent because it is off-season, but it will be „ back in force in tile New Year. Only last week. the Japan Lines’ Japan Kauri sailed after 'discharging Japan cargo and i loading for return. A Philippines i President Lines vessel, the President Quezon, due early next ; week with Japanese cargo is also under charter to the Japan Lines. Now in port, the Liberian- ■ registered. Regent Fleur, yet • another under Japan Lines (charter is discharging Japanese ■ vehicles, and will sail today for Bluff to load aluminium for ■Japan. The regular British trader, iSoochow. on the Manila. Taiwan. Hong Kong service, discharged and loaded here this week. Due tomorrow is India's Star of Uttar Pradesh with Indian and Malaysian cargo for discharge, and she. too. will load for return. Earlv next week, the Singaporeregistered C. Joyce will return to discharge and load Malaysian and Far Eastern cargo. The British, refrigerated cargo liner Gladstone Star is expected to leave Lyttelton this evening for Nakhodka on Russia’s Eastern seaboard, with the largest load of meat sent to Russia from Lyttelton, in one shipment, comprising 3378 tons of carcase mut- ■ ton.
