'No snap election’
(X.Z.P.A.-Reutei—Copyright) WELLINGTON. Sept. 26. The Prime Minister (Mr Rowling) denied today that he was contemplating a snap election later in the year. Speaking after today’s caucus meeting, Mr Rowling • said he would ruie nothing out, but he had not contemplated an election. .Statements and letters ' from significant numbers of i people had shown a general Reeling that the Government j was in command of the situai tion, he said. This was not based on i what he himself wanted and i hoped to hear, but on stateaments from people “who j would not be going around ‘ espousing the cause or the i philosophy of the Labour Party.” He cited Mr J. T. Kneebone, president of Federated Farmers, and the chairman of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. “I have had a lot of mail in the last weeks from people expressing their good wishes, who have shown a very real 1 appreciation of the problems faced bv the country.” The letters had come from all sections of the communijty. said Mr Rowling, 4
