6-0 win to squash visitors

The Australian under 23 squash rackets team lived up to its pre-match publicity last evening. It coasted to a convincing, 6-0, win over a Canterbury team at the Chester Street courts.

Star of the evening was the 22-year-old T. Cheetham, who accounted for M. Billington in three hard-hitting sets. Cheetham has had only one loss on the tour, and at no stage did he look under pressure from Billington. He drove and volleyed many balls into the dead nick and kept Billington unsettled with his pressure volleying. Of deceptively slight build, the Australians’ second player, F. Donnelly, showed marvellous control in winning the first two games against L. Skurr, 9-0, 9-1, and then going to 7-0 in the third. Skurr began to play with great determination and accuracy, and was unlucky not to take the game when he led, 8-7. Results:

Women.—J. Palin beat K. Graham, 9-4, 9-0, 9-3; D. Holland beat M. Holland. 1-9, 9-1, 9-0, 9-4; V. Hoffman beat J. Bruce, 9-7, 9-0. 9-2.

Men.—T. Cheetham beat M. Billington, 9-3. 9-5, 9-2; F. Donnelly beat L. Skurr, 9-0, 9-1, 10-8; K. Andrews beat J. Tolchard, 9-2, 9-0, 9-0.
