Bulgarian dominates middle-weights

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MANILA. N. Kolev (Bulgaria) yesterday ruled the middle-weight division in the world weightlifting championships.

The 21-year-old Army officer from Sofia won with a total of 365 kg, took another gold medal in the jerk (185 kg and a silver by finishing second in the snatch (150 kg R. Rusev, also of Bulgaria, who had earlier equalled the world record of 152.5 kg in the snatch for a gold in that event, finished second over all at 332.5 kg. He had lifted 180 kg for a bronze in the jerk. P. Wenzel (East Germany) was third over all, taking a silver in the jerk (180 kg and a bronze in the snatch (142.5 kg). EBERT TWELFTH Canterbury’s Commonwealth Games gold medal winner, A. J. Ebert, equalled the total he gained at the Games in taking twelfth position out of 14 competitors. Ebert lifted a total of 275 kg — snatch 125 kg, jerk 150 kg. This was 20kg less than his best total in the recent inter-Commonwealth contest at Nelson. On the previous day, P. Sue (Auckland) beat his own New Zealand record by skg to take eleventh place in the light-weight. This was 15kg more than Sue lifted in the Commonwealth Games. POINTS STANDINGS

In the standings of countries after five weights, compiled on the basis of 12 points for a first place, nine for a second, and down to one point for tenth. New Zealand has yet to score a point. Bulgaria leads the 20 scoring nations with 53 points, followed by Japan (42), Poland (41), Iran (30). Hungary (29), and Russia (21).

Before he left for the championships Ebert said that the New Zealand team would be well satisfied to gain tenth placings in their weights. This would represent a satisfactory step in their planned programme towards attaining world standards in the 1975 Olympic Games at Montreal.

Golf.—P. Townsend and M. Bembridge will represent England in the World Cup golf in Caracas, Venezuela, from November 21 to 24. P. Oosterhuis and A.
