LETTERS TO SHAH
Protest over prisoners Letters outlining Amnesty International’s concern over the treatment of prisoners of conscience in Iran, have been sent to the Shah of Iran and the Prime Minister (Mr Rowling). The secretary of the; Christchurch branch of Amnesty International (Mrs H. Roberts) said the branch ; sent the letters because it i had estimated that there i were thousands of political [prisoners in Iran. “Amnesty International has told the Shah that it I believes that no-one should .be imprisoned because hits ! beliefs are contrary to those who rule a country,” she [said. Mrs Roberts said that if the prisoners of conscience ' were tried, the trial would not satisfy the requirements of justice in a democratic country such as New Zealand. “Prisoners of conscience in Iran are often convicted ' on the basis of confessions ; extracted from them while ’ they are being tortured.” Mr Rowling was c. ked to express New Zealand’s concern to the Shah over the inhuman way political prisoners in Iran were treated and Mrs Roberts appealed directly to the Shah himself to release prisoners of conscience in Iran.
