Mini-bus advocate
A system of mini-buses in Christchurch would run on the same financial basis as; taxis, said Mr R. T. Shiels, a' Mini-bus Association candi-; date for the Christchurch! Transport Board. Speaking to an electionmeeting last evening attended by 12 persons. Mr Shiels said that the mini-buses would be privately owned and drivers’ would keep the inpome from fares and pay all operating' costs. Mr Shiels said that minibuses which seated 17 per-; sons would cost about; $lO,OOO each. The board' would lend the money to; drivers who would pay the loan back over a period of years. A fleet of 300 mini-buses’ was envisaged and they! would run over a four-mile radius from Cathedral Square. The present buses owned by i the board would travel along; “express routes” to the outer’ suburbs. Most of the mini-buses would run during the peak hours in the morning and* afternoon and a small number during the rest of the day. Mr Shiels said that he got the idea of a mini-bus system while touring Noumea. Something had to be done to reduce the losses at present being suffered by the board, he said.
