Labour peer resigns
(N Z.P A -Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 25. A Labour peer, Lord St Davids, has joined Lord Chalfont in resigning from the party. The Government’s Chief Whip in the House of Lords (Lady LlewelynDavies) confirmed today that she had received a letter of resignation from Lord St Davids, in which she said, he had emphasised that he would “continue to vote for measures I believe to be Socialist and democratic.” Lord St Davids, who is 57, had held no Ministerial posts in Mr Harold Wilson’s Administrations, as Lord Chalfont had done. Mr Wilson’s Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection (Mrs Shirley Williams) dented the Government’s image of unity still further today, when she declared that she would resign from the Cabinet and leave politics if Britain withdrew from the Common Market. Mrs Williams made her surprising personal statement at the Labour Party’s daily press conference with the Prime Minister sitting nearby.
