jtempted to use artificial (sweeteners in their babies’ food while the sugar shortage persists in Britain hawbeen warned that it is high ly dangerous to do so. The warning comes from a pediatric dietician at a Lon don hospital, who says that I sugar substitutes are defini ■ tely not recommended for ■ infants. I “Chemicals like sorbitol ; and mannitol, which are in II some artificial sweeteners, i can have a harmful effect on Ismail babies, leading to such ■(things as diarrhoea and deI hydration,” she -says. “The main danger is that ' mothers will overestimate tithe doses when adding sugar II substitutes to a baby’s feed, I and the answer is not to use . them at all. “If mothers cannot obtain ordinary sugar, glucose or lactose can be used.
