People urged to lock houses
Christchurch residents should keep their doors and windows locked even when they were home, said the acting head of the Christchurch C. 1.8. (Detective Inspector J. W. Wooders) yesterday.
“Burglars have been so active in Christchurch this year that something has tc be done,” he said. Many of the 25 burglaries reported at the week-end were from houses in which residents were home. While they were watching television, their stereo sets and record players were being taken out the front door.
“Surely it is not too much to ask residents to lock their doors and windows which they cannot keep an eye on while they are home,” Mr Wooders said. “It would 'cause much less trouble than
seeking compensation for’ stolen property.” Two groups of burglaries, one in Avonhead on Friday; evening, and the other inj Burwood on Sunday evening,* are being investigated by; detectives. Two of the three: houses broken into in Chart--well Street, Burwood, were; burgled while the occupants, were home.
Mr Wooders also appealed; to the public for information', about suspicious activity outside or inside houses. “Daylight burglaries are' still continuing, but we aregetting little information; from the public about goings-on,” he said.
