Frigates for Australia
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept. 1. The Australian Defence Minister (Mr Lance Barnard) has signed an agreement to buy two American patrol frigates being developed by the United States Navy. Mr Barnard said that the estimated cost of each vessel was SNZ64m, but this did not include the two helicopters each ship would carry nor spares and other miscellaneous items.
The ships are expected to be delivered in 1981 or 1982 and will replace destroyers which are expected to become obsolete in the 80s.
