Service in Town Hall
An ecumenical service will be held for the Prime Minister (Mr Kirk) in the Christchurch Town Hall at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The night before Mr Kirk’s body will lie in state in the auditorium of the Town Hall so that the public will be able to pay their respects. The Christchurch Town Clerk (Mr J. H. Gray) said last night that it was likely the Town Hall would remain open overnight for this purpose.
Yesterday tickets for the memorial service were being prepared for a representative group of citizens as well as local body leaders, local members of Parliament and members of the Cabinet Mr Gray said that at least 2000 seats would be available in the auditorium of the Town Hall for the public to attend. Today the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr May) will arrive in Christchurch to discuss local arrangements with the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr N. G. Pickering). Until the two men have met no detailed arrangements will be available. In Christchurch yesterday flags were at half mast and prayers for Mr Kirk and the family which survives him were said in most churches. Church bells were silent and those In the Christchurch Cathedral were muffled.
