SHIPPING NEWS Success of Maheno on Tasman run
The Union Steam Ship Com-i pany’s roll-on Tasman motor vessel Maheno is now more than] five years old. Due at Lyttelton next week-end to discharge and' load Sydney cargo, she Is on her128th round voyage. During her service, the 4510-ton (gross) Ma-; heno has sailed about 426,000 nautical miles and has carried about I.lm tons of cargo. The Maheno began the company’s Tasman flexible roll-on system, followed bv her sister Marama. which serves Melbourne. On her Auckland Lyttelton, Sydney link, the 18-knot Maheno has carried every kind of cargo, interlocking with the company’s over-all roll-on pattern. Refrigerated and general cargo in Seafreighters, timber exports, and hundreds of animals, ranging from racehorses to circus bears, have been carried in the Maheno. Built by the Caledon Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, at Dundee, like her sister Marama later, the Maheno has proved a splendid success from the builder’s, owner’s and I shippers’ viewpoint. Today’s twin-screw Maheno perpetuates a famous company name. The earlier Maheno. once known to thousands of passengers. was equally successful. A triple-screw, 5282-ton (gross) turbine steamer, she was altered in 1915 to twin-screw propulsion. Built in 1905 by Denny Brothers, of Dumbarton, who built many famous Union Company and other vessels, the Maheno was the first passenger liner equipped with turbine engines to cross the Pacific. Before the outbreak of the First World War she served the Vancouver run. In 1914 she was fitted as a troopship but later converted into a hospital ship After the war. this Maheno was placed on the inter-colonial run and was a great favourite with passengers. While under tow to her Jaoanese buvers in 1935. she stranded on the Queensland coast, and was a total loss. * & ARRIVALS Rangatira (6.40 a.m.). 9387, Capt. R. E. Pugh-Williams. Wellington (U.S.S.).
