Teen-age council candidate

(N.Z. Press Association) I DUNEDIN, August 11. The first teen-ager to stand for the Dunedin City Council announced his candidature today. Mr Adrian Chisholm, who is standing as an independent, is 18 but will turn 19 before the local body elections in October. He is a commerce student at Otago Polytechnic. In 1972, while a student at John McGlashan College, Mr Chisholm won the New Zealand “Young Conservator of the Year” award. His official nomination will be lodged tomorrow and is expected to be the first received for the city council. This will be the first time that persons aged 18 have been able to vote, or stand, in the local body elections. One of Mr Chisholm’s main planks will be the need for youth to be represented “on issues that affect them today and as parents tomorrow.” The present council has only one member aged under 40—Miss Sue Cameron, who is 28. He is a member of the Young Nationals, but believes that party politics should have no place in local body affairs. Mr Chisholm is treasurer of the Otago Youth Council and its delegate to the Otago Council, treasurer of the Otago Polytechnic Student Association, and student representative on the Otago Polytechnic Council..
