Employee shareholding
Sir, — I gather from recently-reported Parliamentary business that both the Government and the Opposition are kindly disposed towards employee participation in shareholding and management. Recently, shareholders in Alloy Steel N.Z. Ltd, received a generous take-over offer. If the bid is successful, this steelworks could be shut down or moved to the North Island. The products of this company are specialised and highly regarded. It is, however, a labour-intensive industry employing highlyskilled tradesmen, but by modem standards, foundry conditions are unpleasant. This is surely a priority industry for the introduction of a worker participation scheme. A golden opportunity for the Government, with Opposition blessing, to put an aspect of its industrial policy to the test. — Yours, etC " P. NORMAN DAVEY. August 6, 1974.
