Cinema attendance drops
A survey of cinemas shows that attendances had dropped by 9.3 per cent — from 13.1 m in 1970-71 to 11.9 m in 197273, according to the Government Statistician (Mr E. A. Harris). Revenue from admission charges rose oy —> cent to $9.9m fr s7.Bin recorded in the 1970-71 survey, a>._. average admission charge increased to 83c from 60c. At the same time, cinema running costs rose by 27 per cent to reach $9.3m. This total may include some expenses incurred in the selling of confectionary or beverages and in other activities bringing in revenue apart from admission charges. The number of cinemas, including those screening less than six days a week only, declined from 210 to 208 and the number of seats available from 129,000 to 126,000. The average attendance at each performance in 1970-71 was 146, but in the later survey it was down to 125.
