Local branch has wide range of remits for N.C.W.
Remits dealing with a wide range of issues were passed by the Christchurch branch of thei National Council of Women at a special [ meeting this week. The remits will go before the N.C.W. of New Zealand’s conference in September.
The branch decided to approach the Insurance Council of New’ Zealand to consider a reduction in insurance premiums for those who could produce a certificate to show they had attended a * defensive driving course. The branch also decided to approach the Minister of Transport to consider the compulsory inclusion of a personal photograph on every driving licence. The branch agreed that iodised salt only should be on display in shops
and supermarkets, and that non-iodised salt should be sold only on specific request. It ’ also; decided to resume and: expand the campaign to, advertise the need fori iodised salt. A remit was passed urging the collaboration of thei Ministers of Health and Broadcasting, and the Department of Health to promote health education through short tele- i vision commercials. The branch decided to request the Department of Justice to prepare a brochure giving information regarding family conciliation services available in cases of separation and divorce. It was agreed that offices of the Department of j Social Welfare should be sited on the ground floor or with easy flat access to manned lifts, and that an information desk should be sited in all main Social Welfare offices. A remit was passed suggesting that the council request the Broadcasting Council that the gradings of full-length films shown on television be advertised in the “Listener” and press notices, and that they be mentioned in all advances previews of the film. ; The branch supported the; request of the Playi Centre Federation for provision of adequate facilities in all hospitals so that mothers could live in when children were in hospital. It was agreed that the Universities Entrance Board should be asked to reconsider its decision not to permit publication of the marks gained and the school affiliation in the competitive examination for University scholarships.
