Referee abused... ALL BLACK CENSURED
The All Black prop, K. J. Tanner, has been severely reprimanded by the Canterbury Rugby Union for language he used to a referee, Mr A. G. Duckmanton, after a senior club match two weeks ago.
The union’s management committee was told last evening by its judicial chairman (Mr B. J. Drake) that a complaint was laid by Mr Duckmanton after the game between Belfast and New Brighton at Rugby Park.
Mr had reported that as he was leaving the field he was abused by
Tanner, the New Brighton captain. Both the referee and the player attended a meeting of the judicial committee, Mr Drake said, and Tanner had admitted, using “an unfortunate term” and apologised for it. Mr Drake said the commit-
tee spent some time considering the matter and decided that Tanner should be severely reprimanded.
“The committee takes a very serious view of a referee being abused, particularly by the captain of a senior team,” he added.
The game was won by Belfast, 9-8, after it had scored from a penalty in the last minute.
