RELIGIOUS SONG SUCCESS
The successful combination in the religious song contest conducted by the N.Z.B.C. were Father Ronald McKendry. of Makaraka, near Gisborne. and Miss Christine Smith, of Christchurch. Miss Smith sang “April Wine,’’ a religious song Father McKendry composed from the inspiration he drew directly from the vineyards of Waiherere which lie in his parish. Father McKendry will leave for Europe next month and while in London will ask Kiri Te Kanawa to record "April Wine.” Miss Te Kanawa is a personal friend of Father McKendry. She often sang at the E) Greco club which he estab lished in Auckland 10 years ago. Should the recording become popular he will arrange for royalties to be given to Mother Theresa in Calcutta. Miss Smith said that she providentially got the opportunity of singing the song. Had things gone as planned she would have been in Australia during the contest. “The man himself has gone into the song,” she said.
