SENIOR RUGBY
Hornby gets chance The Hornby Rugby Club is to be given a chance to achieve senior status. The grading chairman (Mr J. G. Mullins) reported to last evening’s meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union that of the three clubs which had applied for senior status next year, only Hornby had done well enough in senior reserve this season to warrant consideration.
The other two clubs were Lyttelton and Otautahi. Mr Mullins said that, after a slow start, Hornby had won its last eight games. He successfully recommended that Hornby be promoted to compete with the bottom 11 senior teams for the D.C.L. Trophy when the senior competition is divided next week • and that Hornby’s application [again be considered at the end of the season. Transfer.— After hearing from the player, it was decided to allow P. McManus, who has played four games this season for the Belfast senior team, to transfer to Merivale-Papanui. It iis rare for, such permission to be given during a season, but [most members felt that the circumstances were unusual.
Protest.— A protest from the Marist club that Linwood played C. Hogg, a senior player, in a recent senior reserve match, was referred to the Linwood club for comment.
Presentation.— lt was decided to make a presentation to W p. McCormick after the game against Fiji on Saturday' week in recognition of his 200 matches for the province.
