Greens blues in Sydney

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 10. Cabbages, sprouts, celery, and lettuce are being air-freighted from New Zealand to help relieve Sydney’s shortage of green vegetables. They are going mainly to specialist shops and to providores for shipping orders. Mushrooms also are being imported from New Zealand by one chainstore group. Sydney’s vegetable

shortage is the longest on record. Past shortages have soon been overcome because supplies were available from other states. Since January’s disastrous floods in Queensland, all states have taken a “pasting” this year. Normally, Sydney would be enjoying a feast of winter beans and a glut of cabbages. But at the city markets today, shopkeepers paid 45c a pound for beans, 85c each for cabbages, and up to $1 for cauliflowers.
