Water-colours by Gully

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 9. The Alexander Turnbull Library has bought from the London Geographic Society 12 John Gully water-colours of South Island mountains and glaciers. They have been out of New Zealand for I'lo years. Their purchase was announced today by the chairman of the library’s endowment trust (Sir Alister McIntosh), who said that it was fortunate to have £5OOO available when the watercolours were offered unexpectedly by the society. They were done about 1862 from preliminary sketches and detailed descriptions by von Jlaast, and were presented to the society in 1864. Three of the paintings would be used for the 1974 Turnbull Library prints, said the chief librarian (Mr J. E. Traue).

Although not examples of the fashionable Gullys that have recently fetched record prices at New Zealand art auctions, Mr Traue said he felt that they were artistically superior to the later paintings.
